Despite new threats, many organizations are failing to implement security controls to keep their assets safe. From the Target data breach, to the Heartbleed bug, attackers are finding flaws to penetrate systems, perform espionage, gain valuable knowledge, and steal data.

Every organization should have a comprehensive data security plan in place. Not only could an attack could lead to a loss of availably, it almost always ruins the reputation of the company itself. There is however, an inherint mindset among upper management that spending money on security controls yields no additional return to the business. A basic data security plan recognizes strong passwords, insider threats (or people leaving the company), raising awareness, securing network components, lost laptops and mobile devices, data collection from customers, risk management, traffic encryption and monitoring, and data classification.
